FSASoccerPlus Player
journal from ODP trip
My name is Chandler Scyocurka and I play for
the FSASoccerPlus U13 Eagles for Janusz Michallik and Louis
Hernandez. I also play for the 1995 Massachusetts Olympic
Development Program.
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona,
Spain over February vacation with Mass ODP. It was a trip
for U13, U14, and U15 players. There were two teams made up
of the girls who came. During the trip, we trained at a
local Barcelona facility, trained at a professional teams
facility, attended a professional match, and did a lot of
sight seeing.
At the Olympic Complex/INEF Montjuic, the home of the 1992
Summer Olympics, three Mass ODP coaches trained the two
teams. While we trained at this sports complex, we saw the
World Fencing Championships, where athletes from all over
the world were qualifying for the next Olympics!
Later on in the trip, we got the chance to train at the RCD
Espanyol Cuidad Deportiva Complex with two RCD Espanyol
trainers. Before practices we were able to watch RCD
Espanyols U20 team and we also were able to get pictures
and autographs signed by RCD Espanyols professional team,
including star players Luis Garcia and Carlos Kameni. My
teammates and I had our photographs published in two of
Spains National sports newspapers: Marca! And A.S. Our
pictures were also featured on RCD Espanyols official
websites homepage!
While in Barcelona, our two teams played three Spanish
soccer clubs. My teams record was one win, one loss, and
one tie. We played a U13 team, a U14 team, and a U17 team.
The style of play in Spain is completely different from here
in America. The Spanish style of play was very technical,
but not so much physicality (that is, until we played the
U17 team!).
We also got the opportunity to attend a La Liga mens
professional match between RCD Espanyol and Sevilla. It was
fascinating to see the amazing ball skills and the flow of
the play turn into goals. Sevilla, won the match 4-2.
The sight seeing was also enjoyable. We got a tour of my
favorite team, FC Barcelonas stadium, Estadi Camp Nou, and
the clubs museum. The shopping in Barcelona was fantastic!
Many famous sights included shopping on La Rambla, and the
Gothic Quarter.
There was also an optional side trip to the Medieval resort
town, Sitges. We got to visit the Port area and beaches
overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. My teammates and I were
able to see the unique architecture of Gaudi, including the
Sagrada Familia and the Parc Guell. We spent a lot of time
in Montjuic, which overlooks the city of Barcelona.
Last year I also got the wonderful chance to travel to
Valencia, Spain and attend a FC Barcelona vs. Valencia CF
match. We practiced with a Valencia CF trainer.
The trip to Barcelona and the entire experience was
wonderful! I hope to go back to Spain in the future and also
to travel and play soccer in other parts of the world!

Tory Hawley
Heading to Siena
Avon star heading to
Siena on soccer, presidential scholarships
By Don Rully, Imprint Sports Editor
11/29/2007
Avon High girls' soccer senior center
defender Tory Hawley didn't ever step on the
soccer field alone during her four seasons
as a Falcon.
That's because she has a family history in
the sport few can match.
Hawley has put her gene pool to good use.
She has been an integral part of the Falcons
11 during her high school career. She was a
tri-captain this season with seniors Liz
Donaldson and Caitlin Searson.
"It was nice having three of us because we
all kind of balanced each other out," Hawley
said. Donaldson was the organizer in charge
of creative things like the team scrapbook
and working with her mom to line up pasta
dinners; Searson helped raise funds for the
program; Hawley was loud on the field, she
said.
During the recently completed 2007 season,
the Falcons reached their second consecutive
state semifinal before losing 3-0 to
eventual Class M champ St. Joseph-Trumbull
in Guilford.
"I think what really helped is we don't have
any superstar. Everyone that plays on the
field deserves to be there."
The Falcons last four losses have all been
to Catholic schools.
"I wasn't disappointed of what happened
because St. Joe's is a really good team and
we gave a good effort," Hawley said. "I
don't think it was a 3-0 game. It was more
like a 1-0 game."
Hawley also played in the Connecticut Girls
High School Soccer Coaches Association
Senior Bowl in Rocky Hill last Sunday.
"It was fun. I got to play with some
different players. So it was good," she
said.
Hawley will attend MAAC Division I Siena
College in Loudonsville, N.Y., outside of
Albany on a soccer and Presidential
scholarship, the highest academic
scholarship given by the school. She said
she is planning on majoring in marketing or
management. She would like to pursue
coaching soccer or sports advertising.
Hawley is earning a GPA of about 3.5 out of
4.0 at Avon High. Her favorite subjects in
school are English and history. She has
lived in Avon since she was 3 years old.
Hawley, 18, credits a lot of her success to
Olympic and U.S. Women's World Cup champion
coach Tony DiCicco.
DiCicco leads FSA Soccer Plus out of the
Farmington Sports Arena. Hawley said DiCicco
helped her with college coaches and did a
good job evaluating her skill level. She has
competed on the FSA Soccer Club U-18 Premier
team.
Her college choice complete, Hawley
continues to take part in showcases for the
benefit of other players. The showcases have
taken her as far as Orlando, Fla.. This
weekend she competes in one in New Jersey.
She explained college coaches are e-mailed
before the events in the hope they like what
they see from a player in up to four games
of shorter length.
Hawley also credited Falcons' head coach Jim
Murray by pushing her to do better on the
field and being good to talk with
personally. "He's very approachable," she
said. "He's very in touch with reality,"
"He gives great pep talks."
Almost year-round the 5-4 Hawley plays
soccer three times a week and on weekends.
That doesn't leave much time for anything
else. In the summer she trains. Next summer
she plans to train with the CT Reds, the
women's semi-professional team at FSA.
"I like how it's a team sport," Hawley said
about soccer. "I get bored with sports like
tennis because it's so individual."
Hawley is a scholar-athlete in soccer and
track.
She is also an All-NCCC sprinter.
Hawley's aunt, Judy (Kuehnel) Michalski was
a high school All-American in 1983 at
Simsbury High School, a state championship
season for the Trojans. Michalski went on to
play soccer at UConn and was a professional
player with the CT Lady Wolves.
Michalski's twin sister played Division II
soccer at Keene State College in the late
1980's.
Hawley's grandfather was an All-American and
captain at St. Louis University, part of the
first ever NCAA men's soccer champions in
1959. The Billikens defended their title in
1960.
With parents Patti and Thor Cheyne, and
siblings Cory, 17, Tucker, 12, and Kristy,
10, playing supportive roles,
Hawley is preparing to launch a new
adventure.
She certainly will have the soccer
credentials to keep on truckin.'

SOCCER
- By Carly Hernandez
The crisp biting wind swirls
Around me like a tornado
This is soccer
Each blade of grass
Yellow or green,
Crunchy or lush
Is a stage
This is soccer
A stage as free as the fish in the sea
An ocean of possibility
This is soccer
The stage is the center of attention
Where 22 actors await,
Confident or nervous.
This is soccer
Then a shrill lone whistle blows
And suddenly the TV is turned off mute
The crowd is cheering
The coaches shouting the players yelling
This is soccer
A pass from the back
A give and go from the middle
A cross from the corner
A goal from the box!
This is soccer
11 players faces light up
And swarm around a player
Like bees attracted to honey
This is soccer
89 minutes in, sweat pouring,
Stomachs in knots,
All tied up. PK!
The star player connects
..
A powerful drive in the upper right hand corner
Hopes are crushed and hopes come alive,
This is soccer
